E+H CM448 Buying Guide: I/O, Lead Time and Replacement

CM448 Procurement: Eight Sensors Need a Clear Integration Plan
Combining several liquid-analysis measurements in one transmitter can simplify an installation, but only when its configuration matches the project. For Endress+Hauser Liquiline CM448, procurement should begin with a channel and signal schedule: what is being measured, which sensors are connected and how each value reaches the control system.
Series: Liquiline CM448
Priorities: sensor compatibility, configured channel capacity, I/O assignment, communication and complete delivery scope.

Know the Capacity Without Assuming the Configuration
The manufacturer identifies CM448 as a modular four-wire field transmitter supporting up to eight Memosens sensors. Compatible measurement choices include pH/ORP, conductivity, oxygen and other liquid-analysis parameters. Published family specifications include one to eight Memosens digital inputs and an IP66/IP67 enclosure rating.
Maximum capacity is not proof that every quoted unit includes eight configured channels, all output modules or the requested communication interface. Verify the offered hardware, enabled functions and supported sensor/firmware combinations. Correct mounting and cable-entry sealing are essential; the enclosure rating does not qualify every installation environment.
Build the Signal Schedule Before the Purchase Order
- Define each measuring point: parameter, location, sensor model, cable, assembly and process conditions. Reserve planned future channels explicitly rather than assuming expansion will need no changes.
- Map each destination: record which primary values, temperatures and diagnostics must reach the PLC or DCS. Specify current-output allocation or the exact digital protocol and integration requirements.
- Check installed functions: document relay duties, alarm behavior, cleaning or control requirements and any optional functions. Ask the supplier to identify included modules and software options.
- Verify installation details: power-supply version, mounting, cable entries, environmental limits and service access must match the site.
- Itemize the complete package: transmitter, sensors, cables, assemblies, accessories, technical documents and commissioning support should be clearly separated.
Eight sensor channels do not automatically provide a dedicated analog signal for every measured and secondary value. Compare the actual output plan with the purchased I/O or fieldbus configuration before the order is released.
Manage Lead Time Through Three Milestones
1. Configuration release. Freeze the full code, channel plan, module list, quantity and documentation requirements. Require a written deviation list if a different configuration is proposed. A series-level description is not enough to approve a substitute.
2. Confirmed dispatch. Distinguish reserved stock from factory production or stock subject to prior sale. Request the exact supplied configuration and a written dispatch commitment with outstanding conditions. Stock, pricing and lead time require current confirmation; no fixed delivery claim is made here.
3. Site-ready measurement. Coordinate every sensor, cable and assembly with the transmitter schedule. Allow time for transport, receiving inspection, wiring, integration and commissioning. Reassess the schedule if the project changes a sensor, interface or required document.
Replacement Decisions: Preserve the Measuring Function
Confirm lifecycle status and service options with the manufacturer before choosing repair, like-for-like supply or an upgrade. An older unit is not automatically discontinued. Gather its complete code, serial number, sensor list, module inventory, wiring diagram, signal assignments and configuration records.
- Compare sensor architecture: an analog system may require new sensors and cables when moving to Memosens. Check each measurement separately.
- Review the whole interface: channel count, power, mounting, outputs, protocol and required functions must match or have an approved change plan.
- Plan configuration migration: use backups as reference, but confirm compatibility across hardware and firmware versions. Do not assume that every old setting can be copied unchanged.
- Agree acceptance criteria: follow parameter-specific calibration guidance, verify all used channels and confirm output mapping, diagnostics and required alarm/control responses before returning the installation to service.
A CM448 replacing several transmitters or another CM44x configuration still needs a documented signal, installation and commissioning review.
